Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking and scooting challenge. It inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose people power for their journey to school.
“ It was our first year and we didn't really realise how big a thing it was! It was a great way of bringing all interests together and celebrating healthy living practice. ”
Dates for 2019
Save the date - Big Pedal will take place between Monday 25 March and Friday 5 April 2019.
Registration for the Big Pedal 2019 will open in January 2019 with the launch of the new Big Pedal website.
The Big Pedal has been going from strength to strength for nine years now and we are aiming to make Sustrans Big Pedal 2019 the best year yet. For the first time, walking will be counted alongside cycling and scooting.
How it works
The challenge runs for two weeks and is open to individual classes as well as whole schools. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling, walking or scooting to school.
A school’s best five days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all ten days if they wish.
There are daily prizes up for grabs, including equipment and accessories to help schools travel actively. Free School Resources are available to make the challenges a success.
Check out our Big Pedal information sheet for more details on how the challenge works, FAQ and some of the free resources available to schools.
Can’t take part in the main Challenge?
For schools unable to take part in the main challenge we also have a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school.
