Cycling, walking and scooting to school are great year round - not just during the Big Pedal

The Sustrans Superhero day is a great way to celebrate the end of Big Pedal

The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge. It inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.

The Big Pedal 2018 runs between the 23 April and the 4 May.

Registration is now open via

How it works

This year’s challenge will run from 23 April - 4 May and is open to individual classes as well as whole schools. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school.

A school’s best five days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all ten days if they wish.

2017 was an amazing year

On average 25% of pupils at participating schools took part every day – amazing when you consider just 2% of pupils use cycling in the UK as their usual way to get to school. If those journeys had been made by car, we saved over 847 tonnes of CO2 and over 79,000 gallons of fuel, costing over £384,000.

  • Over 1,300 schools made 1,063,536 journeys to school by bike and scooter.
  • 75% of schools surveyed said that pupils continued to cycle or scoot to school following the event
  • 93% of participating schools surveyed said it raised awareness of cycling and scooting in their school.

With over 2,000 journeys to school during the Big Pedal we visibly reduced the traffic congestion around the school gate and for the first time the parent car park had spaces.

Can’t take part in the main Challenge?

For schools unable to take part in the main challenge we also have a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school.

In 2017, thousands of children across the UK transformed into their favourite superhero for the day to celebrate the finale of The Big Pedal. The day was a great success and raised more than £8,000 for Sustrans. We are excited to be running Superhero day again during the 2018 challenge on Friday 4th May.

All schools will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards including bike stunt shows and equipment, if over 15% of your school cycle or scoot on each day of the challenge. Prize details will be announced on The Big Pedal website.
