Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, formerly known as Big Pedal, is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of pupils to get active during the school run. The next challenge will run from 20 to 31 March 2023.

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is the new name for Sustrans Big Pedal

Since the challenge started in 2011 as Sustrans Big Pedal, it has grown to be much more than a cycling competition.

During the two-week challenge schools compete to record the greatest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting and cycling to school, whilst learning about the benefits of active travel along the way.

To acknowledge the multi-modal nature of the competition, in 2021 we asked schools to help us find a new name for Sustrans Big Pedal.

A name that included walking, using a wheelchair, scooting and cycling to reflected its inclusive nature.

Participating schools submitted their suggestions and the shortlist was put to a public vote.

The clear winner was…

About Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel

The school challenge has now been running for 12 years.

It's inspired hundreds of thousands of families to take active journeys to school.

In 2021, we took a more flexible approach to the competition to accommodate pupils learning remotely.

The results were amazing.

Sustrans Big Pedal 2021 was a great success.

Amazing Journeys theme

This year, once again we tried to make sure as many pupils as possible could take part.

That's why we designed our interactive school resources to be fun and flexible.

Our Amazing Journeys theme encouraged pupils to see their local area from a new perspective whilst learning about the benefits of active travel.

And active journeys taken from home or physical activity completed at home counted as one journey in the challenge for pupils learning remotely.

The participation figures were fantastic.
