We help young people to travel actively and safely to school or to college.
Kickstart active travel at your school and encourage a healthy school run for all students with one of our national events and competitions for schools.
Each year we run Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel (formerly Big Pedal), the UK's biggest school cycling, walking and scooting event.
And we also host Cycle to School Week each year.
Sustrans School Streets is a test programme that aims to ease the congestion, poor air quality and road safety concerns that many schools experience during drop-off and pick-up times, by facilitating timed traffic restrictions on the road outside the school gates.
Sustrans School StreetsWe have developed brilliant resources, incentive schemes, guides and events to help schools and professionals working with young people to encourage active, sustainable travel - both inside and outside the classroom.
We work with partner organisations to make streets around schools safer for children. This includes improving crossings or building new walking and cycling routes to link schools to their communities and to the National Cycle Network. We can also deliver a community-led design approach.
Find out more about our urban design around schoolsOur Big Street Survey is an exciting free curriculum resource enabling pupils to investigate the area around their school and create a manifesto on how to make their streets safer and greener.
In 2018 our work created
5.2 million
school run trips by car removed from the road
3.8 million
journeys recorded by bike, foot or scooter during the Big Pedal
We work by embedding our school officers into the schools. This approach allows us to implement programmes that work for the entire school community - teachers, pupils and parents - creating a culture of active travel from within, monitoring progress and adapting our programme accordingly.
