I Bike schools volunteer, Dumfries and Galloway

I Bike is an innovative schools project promoting cycling, walking and scooting. Children, parents and teachers are empowered to travel actively, safely and confidently to school; encouraging exercise and reducing traffic congestion. The resulting culture of active travel in schools brings safer, happier and healthier communities.

  • Sector: community
  • Location: Dumfries and Galloway
  • Time commitment: Be available on week days during school hours for at least a session a month. We ask that volunteers can commit for 6 months.
  • Volunteer role
  • Closing date: ongoing
  • Reference: 1902203

The project engages with children and young people experiencing barriers to cycling participation, with a specific focus on the transition between primary and secondary and engagement with females.

Volunteers find the new skills they develop very valuable. We provide a variety of training opportunities to develop you and develop your own skills.  We also provide mentoring support from our I Bike Officer.

We provide networking opportunities to meet other volunteers in the area and those involved in the programme from all over Scotland.

What does a Sustrans I Bike volunteer do?

Volunteering with Sustrans I Bike project is fun and very rewarding.

Sustrans Scotland’s I Bike Schools Volunteers support I Bike Officers and school staff in running activities for children and young people in the school environment.

You would be volunteering alongside a dedicated I Bike Officer in schools, supporting activities for children such as learning to cycle, playground cycle skills, led bike rides, led walks and bike maintenance.

Typical outdoor activities include bike skills sessions, learn to ride sessions, led rides, led walks, bike clubs and bike maintenance.  Volunteers will be expected to work with children as part of small groups to teach skills and provide support and encouragement and ensuring safe delivery of sessions in line with training and under the guidance of Sustrans or school staff.

Classroom activities include active travel breakfasts, smoothie bike sessions, schools assemblies, route planning activities and other activity related activities.  Here volunteers will be promoting the benefits of cycling and will provide support to the I Bike Officer or school staff leading the sessions.
