Project Engagement Coordinator – National Cycle Network

Working in close partnership with local authorities and communities across Scotland, you will champion innovation and best practice in community engagement and collaborative design. You will be responsible for designing and delivering meaningful engagement activities that inform, inspire, and empower communities to be part of the change.

About the role

Sustrans is offering an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable transport in Scotland. We are looking for a passionate and experienced individual to lead the engagement aspects of our collaboratively designed National Cycle Network (NCN) projects, with the goal of enabling more people to walk, wheel, and cycle for everyday journeys.

Working in close partnership with local authorities and communities across Scotland, you will champion innovation and best practice in community engagement and collaborative design. You will be responsible for designing and delivering meaningful engagement activities that inform, inspire, and empower communities to be part of the change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on the development and delivery of Engagement Plans for NCN projects in collaboration with partners and the community. 

  • Facilitate best-practice community engagement activities with a range of stakeholders ensuring they are accessible to all. 

  • Gather, analyse, and present feedback from communities and stakeholders at all stages of project development and delivery. 

  • Establish and participate in Community Advisory Groups, ensuring community voices are central to project decision-making. 

  • Design and implement Behaviour Change strategies to ensure maximum impact as projects are delivered.  

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans and regular working outside office hours to deliver events. 

 

About you

You will be a confident and experienced community engagement practitioner, with a track record of delivering effective engagement initiatives and building meaningful relationships with a range of stakeholders.

We’re looking for someone who is proactive, empathetic, and highly organised, with the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in both virtual and face-to-face settings.

Essential Experience: 

  • Proven experience of planning and delivering practical engagement initiatives, including facilitating workshops and presenting to varied audiences. 

  • Experience of designing engagement materials and resources, tailored to different community settings. 

  • Confident in conducting risk assessments related to events and engagement activities. 

  • Experience of working with volunteers and community champions to support inclusive engagement. 

  • Skilled in managing multiple stakeholders across sectors, including local authorities and community organisations.

Knowledge: 

  • Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and its application to inclusive engagement. 

  • Familiarity with the National Standards for Community Engagement  

  • Awareness of safeguarding principles and commitment to ensuring safe and respectful engagement for all.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and decision-makers. 

  • Ability to share learning and good practice with internal colleagues and external partners. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft 356) 

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work and manage time effectively across multiple projects.
