The Active Travel School Award in Wales

Staff, pupils, teachers and parents all contribute to increasing active travel at schools, whether that's walking, cycling or scooting. We know it isn’t always easy, so as part of our Active Journeys Programme, we provide accreditation so you can celebrate your hard work.

Active Travel School Award

The Active Travel School Award guides schools through the key steps for increasing and sustaining the number of pupils travelling to school actively. Register and log into the Active Travel School Award here.

It enables schools to track progress through three levels – bronze, silver and gold – in becoming beacons of best practice.

The award supports schools with collecting evidence towards transport, health and wellbeing sections of Eco-Schools and Healthy Schools Awards.

What is an active travel school?

Active Travel Schools have the ambition and vision to see more active travel to and from their school.

They recognise the benefits that increased levels of active travel bring to the pupils, their families and the wider school community:

  • reduced congestion
  • improved air quality
  • more independent and resilient children
  • safer streets
  • increased levels of physical activity
  • more alert children ready to learn and attain.

Active Travel Schools are a beacon in the community, demonstrating how everyday neighbourhood journeys can be active and healthy.

These schools are taking positive action to encourage and support pupils and their families to travel actively.

The Active Travel School Award guides schools through the key steps for increasing the number of pupils travelling to school actively.

Online platform

The Active Travel School Award platform will support you as you work through our key steps to boost the number of pupils travelling actively to and from school.

Schools can track progress and access a wealth of supporting resources in order to achieve bronze, silver and gold awards.

The awards explained

Bronze

Awarded to schools that are working to help the school community choose to travel in more active and sustainable ways.

Schools awarded bronze will have put into place some organisational, cultural and behavioural changes that are contributing to more pupils travelling actively.

Silver

For schools that continue to demonstrate their commitment to promoting active and sustainable travel.

For this award, much of the energy and resources will come from within the school and its community.

Gold

Awarded to a school that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to promoting active and sustainable travel over several years.

And where this commitment has led to significant and lasting organisational, cultural and behavioural changes.

Replacing School Mark

The Active Travel School Award is replacing the School Mark.

All progress will be migrated over to the Active Travel School Award platform.
