National Route 88 of the National Cycle Network is a proposed coastal route between Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend and Margam Country Park. At the moment, only short sections of the route are open.

1. Newport to Caerleon

This seven-mile riverside path alongside the River Usk links Newport and Caerleon and is flat and mainly traffic-free.

The route is a good alternative to the busy Pillmawr Road and connects University campuses, Newport railway station and provides a safe route to several schools.

To ensure that the route doesn't flood during high tide, a boardwalk made of recycled material was built across the floodplain.

2. Newport to Marshfield

This section of route starts near Tredegar House in Newport and heads to Marshfield.

The route travels along a quiet area of the Wentloog levels which are formed from tidal deposits and are an important wetland resource.

3. Cardiff to Penarth

This section of Route 88 has completed the Cardiff Bay Trail and connected Cardiff and the Vale.

A new bridge has been installed which crosses the River Ely between Penarth and the International Sports Village at Cardiff Bay.

The route means that people living in the Sports Village are now able to reach Cogan railway station, enabling easy commuting on foot or by bike. On the Vale side, the route provides links into Penarth town centre and residential areas.

Whilst there is currently gap in the route through Penarth Town Centre the route resumes on the other side of Penarth travelling along an old railway to Cosmeston Country Park.

4. Barry to Ewenny

Starting at Porthkerry Country Park in Barry this section of the route uses quiet country lanes linking the communities of Rhoose, Llantwit Major and Wick.
