The initial four-mile section of Route 465 has an easy gradient with a tarmac surface and takes you from Llanhilleth Train Station to Abertillery Park. The route starts at Llanhilleth in a scenic, narrow valley and after passing through the rows of terraced houses, you will ride alongside the River Ebbw to Aberbeeg. This is the point where the Ebbw splits into Fawr and Ebbw Fach. The path passes through a beautiful wooded valley where the distinctive blue and white flash of jays are often seen and in June wild strawberries grow. Look out for The Guardian, a recent statue artwork of a miner by Sebastian Boyesen. It was erected near the site of Six Bells Colliery to commemorate a mining disaster in 1960 that killed 45 men.
The six-mile Abertillery to Brynmawr section of Route 465 is largely traffic free. The route takes you past Blaina and Nantyglo.
