Overview

Lakenham Way Greenway is a 1.4-mile traffic-free route in Norwich, perfect for walking, wheeling, cycling, and enjoying the natural environment. Following the path of a disused railway, the Greenway blends urban connectivity with historical and ecological significance. It links the neighbourhoods of Lakenham and Town Close with the city centre, providing a safe and scenic active travel corridor.

The route features accessible paths, seating areas, and a rich railway heritage. It’s also home to diverse wildlife habitats, making it a favourite among nature enthusiasts. Whether commuting, exercising, or simply taking a break from the city, Lakenham Way has something to offer for everyone.

Funding has been secured by Norwich City Council and Sustrans for an improvement project in 2025 that will see, for example, new signage, benches and waste bins along the route. Other projects will also commence that will enhance biodiversity, accessibility and infrastructure.

The route is owned by Railway Paths Ltd and Sustrans have a lease to maintain it.

What you'll see

As you travel along the Greenway, you’ll pass historical brick former railway bridges, once part of the Great Eastern Railway network. The route also showcases managed native scrub, and woodland and grassland areas teeming with wildlife, including birds, bats, and pollinators. During spring and summer, the path comes alive with colour from wildflowers, while autumn provides a quieter, scenic retreat.
