From Carlisle Station cycle follow National Route 7 until the River Eden, where you turn left onto National Route 72 which runs all the way to Workington.
As you leave Carlisle behind you travel on quiet roads, coming to Burgh by Sands, a village that lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This is the end section of Hadrian’s Cycleway route, which stretches the length of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site in the North of England.
Once on the Cardurnock peninsula, the route then takes you to Bowness-on-Solway where there is Campfield Marsh, an RSPB nature reserve.
It's a wetland paradise with 360-degree views of the Solway Plain. Have a picnic and admire the variety of native birdlife.
After travelling through the town of Siloth the route then follows the coast down to Workington along a mix of traffic-free and on-road routes.
At Allonby it's almost entirely traffic-free to Maryport. Allonby has a long sandy beach, with lovely views across the Solway Estuary and Maryport is home to a great Roman Museum and a Maritime Museum - both are worth a visit.
From Flimby to Workington it's traffic-free once again.
