Bay Cycle Way

The Bay Cycle Way (Route 700) is a perfect introduction to long-distance cycling. Morecambe Bay is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK. As you cycle along the route you’ll be rewarded with incredible views, world-class historic sites and artefacts, traditional food and rare wildlife.

The Bay Cycle Way (Route 700) is a stunning long-distance route that takes you on a tour of Morecambe Bay, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the UK.

It takes you from the south west coast of Cumbria to Glasson Dock in Lancashire.

This route is a feast for the senses. As you cycle along the route you can enjoy the sights of the landscape, the smell of the sea, the sounds of the waves, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments.

The route travels past a number of fantastic tourist attractions including:

  • Conishead Priory, a Gothic revival country house,
  • Morecambe’s art deco hotel
  • pretty Cartmel (the home of sticky toffee pudding!)
  • and the RSPB’s wildlife haven at Leighton Moss.

Leighton Moss has the largest reed bed in north-west England. If you stop off here you have the chance to spot otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer.

You’ll also have the change to visit historic Lancaster. While in this lovely town you can enjoy its castle and museums and find out more about its history.

Pretty Georgian architecture lines the banks of the River Lune or you can wander along the meandering towpaths of the canal.

Take some time in Williamson Park to discover its hidden follies and stunning Edwardian-designed butterfly house.

Along the Bay Cycle Way, you'll be able to take in stunning views across the bay, with a chance to detour down to the beach, where you can look out for seals at Walney, or try to get a glimpse of rare birds like ospreys or red kites.

As you travel along the route you’ll pass Glasson Dock. The harbour at Glasson originally opened in 1787 and at its height, it was the largest port in the north-west.

Cargo from the port was transported onwards via Lancaster Canal. It’s still a busy port today and there is a small selection of shops and places to eat.

This route is a perfect and gentle introduction to long-distance cycling. For the experienced, two days is all that is needed.

However, for those wanting to take their time, savour the views and visit the attractions, four 20-mile days is highly recommended.

The development of the Bay Cycle Way is part of Morecambe Bay Partnership's 700 Days Scheme which, with £0.5 million from the Coastal Communities Fund, will support over 260 tourism-related jobs and safeguard many thousands more.

Morecambe Bay has its own distinctive character. Along the route, there are incredible views, world-class historic sites, traditional food and rare wildlife.

The Bay Cycle Way is an excellent introduction to cycle touring and will suit those who want to combine a cycling holiday with visiting local sights.
