Route 562 of the National Cycle Network is in development. Once completed it will connect Southport with Aston via Burscough, Wigan, St Helens, Widnes and Runcorn.

There are short open sections in Southport, between New Lane and Apply Bridge rail station and from Widnes to Aston.

From Widnes through Runcorn to Aston mainly follows traffic-free paths alongside major roads.

A planned section between Burscough and Wigan will follow the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

The connecting sections of route between Southport and Widnes are proposed and/or under development.
