Newport to Caerleon

Connecting Newport City Centre to the historic town of Caerleon, this superb traffic-free route follows the line of the River Usk, taking in wonderful views, artwork and a wealth of Roman history.

Starting at McDonalds in Newport, turn left onto Lyne Road and then right on to Albany Street, passing the back of Sainsburys where you’ll join the start of the traffic-free path. Follow the route under the M4 flyover, up a short steep climb and around a bend, where you’ll be rewarded by gorgeous views over the river.

The route veers away from the river for a short stretch along Pwll Mawr Road, before it picks up the riverside path once again

Follow the route onto the impressive boardwalk that glides alongside the river making a wonderful noise as you cycle over the planks. As you enter Caerleon, keep your eyes peeled for the portrait bench. Featuring life-sized characters from Caerleon’s Roman past, this is a perfect place to stop off for a picnic or a short rest bite.

Pass over the railway and around the football pitch on to "The Fosse" where you’ll discover some of the Roman wonders of Caerleon, including the most complete Amphitheatre and the only remains of a Roman legionary barracks in Europe.

The route conveniently ends in Caerleon’s charming town centre. Learn about this fascinating little town and the impact it’s had on history by exploring the National Roman Legion Museum and the Roman Fortress and Baths; treat yourself to a traditional pub lunch in one of the great restaurants, or while away the afternoon at the Ffwrwm’s quaint sculpture garden.
