Meet Nick, our office volunteer

Office volunteer Nick outside in a local park

Nick is our fantastic office volunteer in Bristol. Volunteering with the Behaviour Change and Engagement Team, he lends a hand with all things administration and communication. He tells us about his role and why he chose to volunteer with Sustrans.

I am pleased to say that I have recently joined Sustrans as a volunteer in the Bristol office.

I come in once a week to help out with administration work. Each week has proven to be varied and given me an insight to Sustrans as a charity.

What does an office volunteer do?

Being an office volunteer I have learnt so much about Sustrans and what they do. I have done a whole range of interesting tasks in my time here. This has helped me develop my skills and contribute to an amazing charity.

Everyone that works at Sustrans is very welcoming and you instantly feel part of the team.

Some of my tasks so far have included updating and standardising necessary training documents for volunteers and helping to prepare for this year's Volunteer Group Co-ordinator conference. I've also had the opportunity to learn more about behvaious change which has relevance to my course at university.

Why I volunteer for Sustrans

A few years ago I started my undergraduate degree studying Geography at Nottingham Trent University. I had a particular interest in sustainability and the environment.

Having this interest in mind, I decided to do my dissertation on transport in Nottingham and whether individuals consider the environment when choosing their mode of transport for commuting.

This year I have started a Master’s degree in Transport Planning. I came across Sustrans by literally walking past their office.

Once I had a browse through their website I felt enthusiastic to learn more about them. This and a vision for a more sustainable future is what led me to applying for the volunteer role in the Bristol office.

Thinking about volunteering with Sustrans?

There is a very pro-active feel within the office towards supporting sustainable transport.

The volunteer engagement is great! There’s a range of training courses which I will be able to attend and I look forward to continuing to volunteer for Sustrans.
