Are you passionate about cycling and would like to inspire more people to get on their bikes and be more active?
We're currently looking for positive and enthusiastic volunteers to help us encourage more people to cycle for their journey to and from work. We need volunteers to lend a hand in supporting led rides in the Bridgwater, Somerset area.
The Bridgwater Way Workplace project starts in July 18 and will run until March 20. It aims to provide information, training and support to employees working in Bridgwater and the surrounding area to give them the skills, confidence and motivation to cycle for their daily commute.
As part of the initiative the Project Officer will be running a series of 8 week Active Steps health programmes. This aims to increase the levels of activity through cycling. To achieve this weekly led rides will be delivered which will show people safe quieter cycle routes to key destinations and give participants the skills and confidence to tackle certain obstacles and barriers which may deter them from cycling.

What does a Sustrans volunteer ride leader do?
The led rides will start and end at a workplace and use quiet and off road routes. They will generally be during lunchtime or after work Monday to Friday and be for less confident or infrequent and new riders.
A Sustrans Ride Leader would:
- support the Ride Manager to lead the rides
- support with planning a range of suitable routes in the local area
- follow the provided risk assessment and plan for the route
- ride the planned route ahead of the ride to familiarise yourself with the route
- support with signing in participants and carry out relevant checks before the ride sets off.
What we're looking for
We are looking for volunteers who:
- are confident and experienced cyclist
- have basic knowledge of bike maintenance (e.g. undertake a safety check, repairing a puncture), though not essential
- are able to be patient and encouraging with participants
- are friendly, approachable and a good communicator
- enjoy riding as part of a group.
The Active Steps Programme takes place over eight consecutive weeks several times a year. One ride takes up to one hour, plus initial preparation, and two rides may take place back to back. Rides will generally take place during lunchtime or after work on week days so you would need to be available at these times of the day.
We are looking for someone who can help with eight or more rides a year.
You will also need to commit to:
- a half day to attend induction
- one day mandatory ride manager training and six monthly refresher checks
- one to two days per year to attend training events.
Training and support offered
Sustrans will provide you with the training, skills and tools you need to carry out this role.
All volunteers attend a half day Sustrans Essential course. We also offer activity-specific training. For example we have a training course to enable you to safely lead or support a group ride. All Sustrans volunteer training courses are free.
You’ll have access to Sustrans guides and online support. You’ll have the chance to meet other volunteers at training and networking events and to get involved with other Sustrans activity in the area.
