Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

Want to support your community?

Looking to spend more time outdoors?

Interested in meeting new people?

Volunteering for Sustrans will help you with all the above.

What does a Sustrans task day leader do?

Sustrans are the custodians of the National Cycle Network, which covers over 12,000 miles of the UK and is used by thousands of people each week.

We have the chance to support a safe and accessible space for outdoor learning right at the heart of one of our key routes.

We want to revitalise a space once loved by the community, now overgrown with vegetation and scattered with litter. Our Outdoor Classroom has helped children learn more about the natural environment over the past six years, and now community members want to improve access to this space for all.

A Task Day Leader will organise, deliver and supervise activities at the Outdoor Education site on the Brampton Valley Way, located just south of Welford Road, Northampton NN2.

They will attract community members to activity days, and help shape a vision for the site so the community can enjoy the space.

As a Task Day Leader, you will be responsible for the health and safety of participants on site when delivering an activity. You’ll follow the relevant Sustrans practices and procedures for protecting people.

Activities on the site could include:

  • litter picks
  • vegetation clearing
  • wildlife surveys and spotting
  • clearing signage
  • reporting serious issues to Sustrans or the relevant group.

What we're looking for

We'd love it if you were:

  • proactive in organising sessions and activity days
  • prompt in providing the relevant health and safety paperwork to Sustrans
  • astute when leading activities, looking out for hazards or issues and handling them appropriately
  • friendly and able to advocate for Sustrans where possible.

If you're unsure about any of the above, we're happy to help you develop these skills where we can.

Time commitment

On average, we'd ask for three days a month to help with this project:

  • One day for advertising opportunities
  • One day for ensuring health and safety documents are prepared
  • One day for delivering an activity

The opportunity can be flexible around your needs.

Training and support offered

  • Equipment and resources to support your project
  • Virtual and spoken training to deliver activities and communicate with others
  • Access to webinars and discussions on active travel and Sustrans’ work
  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Online community of volunteers to discuss opportunities
  • Support and guidance from our volunteer coordinator
