Why become a Sustrans volunteer?
Our volunteers are fundamental in looking after the National Cycle Network and supporting others to be more active.
Volunteers undertake maintenance to keep the network well maintained, well signed and ready for the many walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
If you have a passion for walking or cycling along with plenty of enthusiasm then we’d like to hear from you.
What does a Sustrans volunteer ranger do?
As a volunteer you'll be expected to carry out agreed tasks from your volunteer group plan.
This will be in coordination with your group and Sustrans.
Some tasks may be organised by the whole group and others are self-led.
Your role as a ranger may involve:
- inspecting an allocated section of route
- carrying out general tidy ups and clearing back overgrown vegetation as per the health and safety guidance
- checking for missing or broken signs and fitting temporary signs as per the signing guidance and following training
- attending group workdays, training and signing rides
- looking after any artwork or mileposts on your route
- taking part in other group activities such as organised rides, bike maintenance, learn to ride sessions and events to promote the work of Sustrans and encourage more people to walk and cycle
- reporting any major issues to the relevant person (we'll advise you on this)
- liaising with our Network development manager regarding any new route developments in your area
- recording your own activities on our dedicated website for Sustrans volunteers
- following Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
- being able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures.
What we're looking for
We're looking for people who:
- are self-motivated to carry out tasks independently once directed
- work well within a team
- lives close to or travels regularly along your allocated section of route by sustainable transport
- have good communication skills
- are able to work with a diverse range of people and committed to Sustrans' mission.
We welcome applicants with a wide range of skills but above all enthusiasm and commitment.
The following is an outline of the time commitment for this role:
- a half day initially to attend induction and activity specific training
- monthly (minimum) - check your section of route
- attend up to 4 group meetings per year (usually in the evening) to keep up-to-date with local developments and the group plan
- attend at least one annual training event, to keep up-to-date with best practice guidance on your activities.
- volunteers may also be asked to support periodic workdays organised by the local group.
This is an ongoing role and is not generally suitable for short term volunteer placements.
Training and support offered:
You will receive training, support and direction from the Sustrans volunteer coordinator, land manager and Network development manager.
- An initial training and induction session will be provided regionally.
- Sustrans offers a number of different training courses that will support you in your role e.g. signing the network, organising and leading a workday, ride manager and walk leader training.
- Other training will provide valuable updates and networking opportunities with other volunteers.
- You will receive central communications to support you in your role and can join the online community to find support from other volunteers.
- Health and safety guidelines and simple risk assessments will be provided.
- Opportunities to further develop your role and support given to assist you with organising group activities such as workdays and rides.
