What does a Sustrans volunteer Group Coordinator do?

Group Coordinators are responsible for coordinating volunteer activities in an agreed geographical area. This involves motivating a volunteer group to carry out a range of tasks aimed at maintaining and enhancing the National Cycle Network, supporting Sustrans’ projects in the area and/or promoting sustainable travel.

Group Coordinators often carry out another volunteer role in addition, often that of route maintenance volunteer.

Communication is essential to the role, so time will be spent communicating and responding to volunteers in the group and with the Volunteer Coordinator and volunteer staff.

This is an ongoing role and is not generally suitable for short term volunteer placements, unless as a temporary measure.

As the Group Coordinator you will be expected to:

  • create and review a group plan of prioritised and delegated tasks and activities in coordination with the local volunteer group and area staff
  • coordinate regular meetings and social gatherings with the group
  • manage the allocation of tasks within the group
  • understand the different maintenance responsibilities for the Network in their area
  • identify gaps and opportunities for volunteers and support recruitment as needed in coordination with local staff
  • welcome and orientate new volunteers to the group and the specifics of their role locally
  • provide a communication link to the volunteer coordinator and relevant local staff
  • follow and demonstrate to the volunteer group, Sustrans’ Health and Safety and Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • encourage the group of volunteers to record their contributed hours and activities on VolunteerNet
  • attend group/project meetings, relevant training and activities
  • be able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures
  • record own volunteer activities on VolunteerNet

  • up to 12 evening meetings per year
  • one day to meet with Volunteer Coordinator and area staff to discuss and review the group plan

Training and support offered

  • A volunteer welcome session and induction, as well as a Group Coordinator session.
