Volunteer Bike Ride Assistants, East Sussex

Sustrans is running a series of Lunchtime Led Rides for staff at Eastbourne Hospital and Wealden District Council. We need volunteers to assist on these rides particularly acting as back markers.

  • Community
  • East Sussex
  • Wednesday, Thursday or Friday lunchtimes
  • volunteer role
  • Ongoing
  • Reference 1412171

Taking a different route every week these rides will highlight different aspects of the local area, show how easy it is to cycle in from the closest train stations, and introduce people to some of the great local cycle routes including the Cuckoo Trail.

This is ‘cycling for all’, leading groups of up to 10 people on rides up to 10km.  It is the chance for staff to get to know the surrounding area, to see how they can get to work sustainably, to experience the joy of cycling and simply to get out in the fresh air at lunchtime.

Sustrans has been delivering a similar series of Led Rides at various other workplaces across East Sussex. These have proved very popular with several people at each workplace then starting to cycle to work, making a really positive impact on participants’ wellbeing.

Why be a volunteer ride assistant?

There are lots of great benefits to helping people build their confidence with cycling:

  • you'll get to share your passion for cycling and show people how easy and enjoyable it is to ride a bike
  • it's a great way to build up your experience of led rides (if you wish to lead rides for Sustrans, experience is a key component)
  • it's the perfect way to keep active and get outdoors

What do I need to do to be a volunteer ride assistant?

We're looking for someone who is:

  • available on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday lunchtimes
  • a competent cyclist
  • has previous experience of being part of a Sustrans Led Ride (We are running Led Rides in Brighton and East Sussex which you can join if you need to gain experience).

Times, dates and venues

All rides occur between 12-2pm, depending on the day (arrive for briefing by our Project Officer and then the one hour ride).

Eastbourne District General Hospital, Eastbourne (1 mile cycle from Hampden Park train station) - alternate Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes.

Wealden District Council, Hailsham (3 mile cycle along the Cuckoo Trail from Polegate train station) - every Thursday lunchtime.

We can reimburse you travel expenses (pre-approved) and a cup of tea afterwards!
