School volunteer, Oxfordshire (Cowley, Witney, Bicester, Abingdon)

Would you like to help create safe places for children to enjoy a traffic-free school run? We're looking for a volunteer to help with temporarily restricting motor vehicle access around school entrances at the start and end of each school day.

What does a Sustrans school volunteer do?

As a schools volunteer you will ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved in the temporary road closure. Other activities include:

  • you will close and reopen the road safely, positioning signs and cones according to official guidelines. You will divert through traffic and guide drivers needing access if necessary
  • you will run through a prepared questionnaire with parents, residents and road users to get their views on the temporary road closure
  • you’ll talk to children, motorists, local residents and answer people’s questions about the road closure.

What we're looking for

We are looking for people who are:

  • passionate about active travel
  • excellent communicators with children, local residents and motorists 
  • enthusiastic and friendly
  • punctual and reliable. 

Time commitment

We're looking for someone to start in May/June for 6 weeks.

Training and support offered

You will receive a half-day training on how to carry out this role before you start. The training is compulsory and will cover a range of things including how to lift and carry signs, cones, barriers.  It will also address how to answer some of the frequently-asked questions by road users.

You will be supervised and supported by a local Sustrans Project Officer.
