Why become a Sustrans volunteer?

This is a great opportunity to take part in a practical project that will develop your understanding of our Paths for Everyone work.

You'll have the opportunity to get out and about in your community and make a practical difference to local cycle route signage.

About our removal and reclassification project

We are making changes to the Network signage in Wolverhampton as part of our removal and reclassification re-signing project.

This project has identified sections of the Network that need to be removed and longer routes that are being reclassified as they fall short of the standard that we have set for the Network.

We have updated our online map to reflect these changes, and now need to ensure the signing on the ground is up to date.

What does a Sustrans re-signing volunteer do?

With support from Sustrans staff, you will undertake the following tasks:

  • Working in pairs to audit an allocated section of route to be removed or reclassified
  • Identifying locations where signing needs to be amended
  • Recording required changes to signage on site using a survey accessed through your smartphone
  • Ordering the required materials to undertake the signing changes identified
  • Undertaking work in pairs to amend signage where safe and practicable
  • Undertaking all work in line with Sustrans' R&R signage training and guidance
  • Being able and willing to act in accordance with Sustrans’ policies and procedures
  • Recording volunteer activities on VolunteerNet

What we're looking for

We’re looking for people who:

  • are practical and enjoy being outdoors
  • are willing to work with a fellow volunteer when undertaking the auditing and amending of signage
  • have access to a smartphone and the ability to download the Survey123 app
  • are self-motivated to carry out tasks independently
  • have good attention to detail
  • have good navigation skills
  • possess good IT skills and the ability to interpret online mapping.

Time commitment

We are looking for someone who can volunteer for a few hours each month.

The role will continue until the re-signing work is complete, which is anticipated to take 2-3 months.
