National Route 72 of the National Cycle Network will start in Kendal and makes its way around the Cumbrian coast via Barrow-in-Furness and Whitehaven to Silloth. From Silloth the route heads along the Solway Firth to Carlisle and across Northumberland to South Shields via Haltwhistle, roughly following Hadrian's Wall.
Ravenglass to South Shields is known as the Hadrian's Cycleway, although some sections between Ravenglass and Silloth are using interim routes and are not signed.

On 28 May 2018 the Northumberland County Show will be taking place at Bywell near Stocksfield, close to this Route. On this day the route will stay open for cyclists, but they should expect to dismount through a pedastrian area for approx. 100m.
