Route 688 is the central part of the Way of the Roses cycle route across the Yorkshire Dales, Nidderdale and the Vale of York, via Pateley Bridge, Ripon and Boroughbridge. The route is entirely onroad with steep ascents / descents (especially Greenhow Hill). There are signed links from Gargrave, Skipton and York stations.

- Brimham Rocks and Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal (both National Trust) are on the route
