Route Description

The southern half of the Lon Las Cymru connects Llanidloes in the heart of Wales to the attractive finishing points of Cardiff or Chepstow. The more challenging alternative takes National Route 42 in Hay on Wye to Abergavenny and Chepstow via a taste of the Black Mountains, or continue along Route 8 along the largely traffic-free Taff Trail from Brecon to Cardiff.

From Llanidloes, the route continues to Rhayadar and on to the stunning Elan Valley. Bursting with greenery and wildlife, you will not be disappointed by the natural beauty of this section of Lon Las. The route then heads south to the pretty market town of Brecon where the popular traffic-free Taff Trail begins. Skimming several valleys towns, the route continues on to central Cardiff, before reaching its end point in bustling Cardiff Bay.

The Route 42 alternative remains rural in character all the way to the end with the route meandering its way along the lanes, hills and woodlands of Monmouthshire to the historic town of Chepstow via Abergavenny. Take your pick!
