Route Description

This popular greenway ride begins at Dewsbury and heads into lovely countryside along the splendid Calder and Spen Valley Greenway, Spen Valley Greenway won a European Greenway Award in 2007 for its success in encouraging people to take up cycling!

To follow the route:

  • Exit Dewsbury station, crossing over the A638 (using a pedestrian crossing) and head downhill through quiet town centre streets. At the traffic lights cross the A644, turn immediately right through a steel arch to pick up the riverside section of the Calder Valley Greenway, following signs for National Route 66.
  • Cross the A644 again (using a toucan crossing) and join the former railway line that is the Spen Valley Greeenway, following signs for National Route 69.
  • From here, you’ve 10 wonderful miles of traffic free pedalling. Look out for a fun selection of sculptures on route - metal sheep, giant hoops, digger seats, Tour de France themed mileposts and more!
  • You pass close to the towns of Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton with plenty of cafes, pubs and play areas, so feel free to go and explore.
  • On arrival in Oakenshaw, pause and enjoy the park and skatepark, or the local nature reserves of Toad Holes Beck and Railway Terrace.
  • Retrace the route to Dewsbury.
