Route Description

This fantastic route takes you along the magnificent Northumberland Coast and past castles, tourist attractions and quaint fishing villages. Young and inexperienced cyclists need to take care on the Hipsburn Road leaving Alnmouth and in Amble Town Centre.

On leaving Alnmouth you had west on Hipsburn Road.  Once you have travelled past the arched bridge over the River Aln you turn left through a gated entrance which takes you onto the traffic free path.  This continues for about a mile before heading towards the coast, where you follow a coastal path all the way to Warkworth.  Warkworth is a great stopping off point and here you have the chance to explore Warkworth Castle.  Sitting on a hilltop above the River Coquet, its incredibly impressive and there is a free audio tour which provides lots of interesting information.

Once you have past the Castle look out for signs to Amble.  You drop down the bank onto a roadside pavement path next to the River Coquet and weir.  The signs will lead you through the Marina and on quiet streets through Amble.  You then pick up a traffic calmed road to Low Hauxley before joining a coastal path to Druridge Bay.

Druridge Bay is a stunning seven mile stretch of sand running from Amble to Cresswell and forms part of the Druridge Bay Country Park. Here you'll find a series of smaller nature reserves that are home to a variety of birds - from swans to the rare Golden Eye Snipe. The Country Park has all the amenities you need to enjoy a day at the coast with toilets, cafe and children's play area. The park is centred on a lake with surrounding meadows and woods which has been restored from an old opencast coal mine - the perfect place for a picnic.
