Route Description

Starting in Caerphilly, this town is famous for its imposing leaning castle as well as its namesake cheese. Caerphilly's castle is the second largest in the UK only beaten by Windsor.

From the hustle and bustle of town life, this route transports you to tranquil green fields and blue bell-carpeted woods with protected wildlife sites. A perfect setting for a picnic, it's hard to imagine this area was once at the centre of heavy duty coal production.

This traffic free pathway running alongside the B4263 winds on to Abertridwr - one of two sleepy towns nestling in the Aber Valley and brimming with industrial history. Contained in Abertridwr Heritage Park are the ghostly remains of the former Windsor Colliery and a reminder of the human cost of its industrial might.

Just four years after the mine opened in 1898 six men perished after drowning in 25 foot of water. But the site of one of Britain's worst ever mining disaster is yet to come on this route. At the Senghenydd site of the Universal Colliery, 439 men and boys lost their lives after an explosion tore it apart in 1913. There is a memorial and museum commemorating this and other disasters in the village. It is worth riding or walking this route to fit in with opening hours at the Aber Valley Heritage Centre and Museum in Senghenydd Community Centre.

Llwybr Beiciau Cwm Aber

O hwrli-bwrli tref Caerffili, mae’r llwybr hwn yn eich cludo i feysydd glas tawel a choedwigoedd sy’n garped o glychau’r gog â safleoedd bywyd gwyllt sydd wedi eu gwarchod.

Manylion llwybr

  • Rhanbarth/Ardal: Cymoedd De Cymru
  • Pellter: 2.5 milltir
  • Dosbarthiad: Hawdd
  • Traffig: Di-draffig
  • Arwyneb: Cymysg
  • Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol: Llwybr 475
  • Dechrau: Caerffili
  • Gorffen: Senghennydd
  • Mynediad: Gorsaf Reilffordd yng Nghaerffili

Disgrifiad o’r llwybr

Mae’r llwybr yn dechrau yng Nghaerffili, tref sy’n enwog am ei chastell mawreddog â'r tŵr cam ac am y caws sy’n dwyn ei henw. Castell Caerffili yw’r ail fwyaf yn y DU, gyda dim ond Windsor yn rhagori arno.

O hwrli-bwrli bywyd y dref, mae’r llwybr hwn yn eich cludo i feysydd glas tawel a choedwigoedd sy’n garped o glychau’r gog â safleoedd bywyd gwyllt sydd wedi eu gwarchod. Lleoliad delfrydol ar gyfer picnic, mae’n anodd dychmygu y bu’r ardal hon unwaith yn ganolbwynt cynhyrchu glo trwm.

Mae’r llwybr di-draffig hwn sy’n rhedeg ar hyd y B4263 yn nadreddu ei ffordd i Abertridwr - un o ddwy dref dawel sy’n nythu yng Nghwm Aber ac sy’n gorlifo â hanes diwydiannol. Ym Mharc Treftadaeth Abertridwr ceir gweddillion hen bwll glo’r Windsor sy’n atgof o gost ddynol ei anferthedd diwydiannol.

Dim ond pedair blynedd wedi i’r pwll agor ym 1898 bu farw chwe dyn wedi iddynt foddi mewn 25 troedfedd o ddŵr. Ond mae safle un o drychinebau glofaol gwaethaf Prydain i ddod ar y llwybr hwn. Yn safle Gwaith Glo Universal yn Senghennydd collodd 439 o ddynion a bechgyn eu bywydau pan y’i chwalwyd gan ffrwydrad ym 1913.  Mae amgueddfa a chofeb i goffau hyn a thrychinebau eraill i’w gweld yn y pentref. Mae’n werth beicio neu gerdded y llwybr hwn i gyd-fynd ag oriau agor Canolfan Dreftadaeth ac Amgueddfa Cwm Aber yng Nghanolfan Gymunedol Senghennydd.
