We must design out the danger from our roads

25 February 2015

Today new data concerning cycling casualties in Greater London was released by insurance company Aviva. Within the document 12 road accidents a day involving cyclists in Greater London were reported.

Matt Winfield, Sustrans London Deputy Director commented:

“We mustn’t create the impression that cycling is an especially dangerous activity when statistically it isn’t.  The most significant source of danger is poorly designed roads that aren’t fit for all types of road users.’

“Greater levels of cycling in London will create vibrancy, reduce congestion and help tackle air pollution. To aid this culture change we must design out the danger and conflict from our roads, and deliver outstanding integrated infrastructure by creating high quality streets that are comfortable and attractive for cycling across London.”
