Champions promote cycling and walking at Canary Wharf

Sustrans worked with employee volunteers from international law firm Skadeen to help them promote walking and cycling options to work during the London 2012 Games.

The training, support and resources Sustrans provided on influencing travel behaviour, and the events that were run, led to lots of people switching from public transport to cycling and walking for their daily commute.

We identified transport as the biggest risk to the business during the Olympic Games. Promoting active travel enabled us to create a groundswell of positivity and engagement... It has been a real eye opener. We aim to continue organising group walks and rides as a way of building morale.

- George Pantelides,
Operations Manager, Skadeen

The champions organised:

  • an intranet micro-site
  • lunchtime events
  • travel advice
  • route planning sessions
  • pool bikes
  • cycle storage

Sustrans’ Travel Champions is Sustrans’ employee volunteering programme. Sustrans recruit, train and support volunteers that want to promote active and sustainable travel in their workplace.

Typical benefits of Sustrans’ employee engagement projects deliver estimated savings to organisations of a minimum of £7,500 a year.
