“ Sustrans’ Better by Design course encourages participants to think more like a cyclist, and to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to providing cycle routes, particularly in congested urban areas. The course is the most comprehensive and well-structured cycle design course I have attended. ”
Better by Design: Cycling and walking infrastructure design
This recently revamped two-day course aims to inspire participants about why good spaces to move in sustainably are important, how to make the case for this and to identify what makes good spaces to move sustainably in (with a focus on cycling).
Day One: Introduction and overview in the types and functions of streets, places and routes.
Day Two: Best practice design examples to equip participants to be able to design high-quality streets and infrastructure to enable people to move in sustainably. This day will look in greater detail at the design of links, junctions and crossings and will include a practical exercise based on projects that delegates are working on.
We take a detailed look at what it takes to create high-quality traffic-free routes, the constraints, how to apply realistic solutions to feasibility reports as well as to ongoing and planned construction projects.
Who is the training for?
The training programme is for professionals involved in the development and design of cycle-friendly highway schemes and off-road routes and networks. Over the last six years we have trained hundreds of professionals and practitioners in local authorities, not-for-profit organisations and consultancies.
