We're celebrating the success of a programme to boost usage of the Luton to Dunstable cycle superhighway! More cyclists than ever are now using the route thanks to our campaign.
We were set the aim of raising awareness and increasing usage of the route between August 2016 and March 2017.
We engaged with the public and businesses from the Travel Choices Hub in Dunstable where we met over 6000 visitors and representatives from 43 businesses.
“ The Luton to Dunstable cycle superhighway has improved access and connectivity, broken down barriers and created opportunities for people to travel more sustainably. ”
We collaborated with a host of partner organisations, from the local job centre to education providers’ at the Dunstable Travel Choices Hub.
This helped people to gain the confidence to take part in active travel and reduce short car journeys in a number of ways.
We organised a programme of local walks, gave people cycle training and delivered a programme of school activities. These activities helped to extend awareness of the benefits of cycling and walking and helped to break down barriers to training, up-skilling and employment.
Speaking on the success of the project Sustrans Active Travel Officer Olivia Teague said:
“The Luton to Dunstable cycle superhighway has improved access and connectivity. It’s broken down barriers and created opportunities for people to travel more sustainably. Our job was to make people aware of the route and to show people how they could benefit from using it.
“At the Dunstable Travel Choices Hub we’ve achieved this through meaningful engagement with individuals and businesses.
"This has increased awareness of the opportunities offered by this important link and increased usage. On average, there’s an extra 65.5 trips made every day on the route with 23,910 trips being made over the year.
"This just shows that the successful delivery of an effective community liaison programme can make a real difference and improve outcomes.”
