Steve Brooks to join us as Wales Director

Steve Brooks joins Sustrans as Wales Director
26 September 2016

We are delighted to announce that Steve Brooks will succeed Jane Lorimer as National Director for Sustrans Cymru. He will join us at the beginning of November 2016.

Steve is well known in Wales for his high profile and impactful contributions to public affairs over a twenty year period. He joins us from the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) where he is currently Wales Director. Previous roles include Head of Oxfam Cymru and the Sustainability Development Commission. He is a trustee of the Bevan Foundation.

Steve is particularly looking forward to joining Sustrans because of the many affinities between our work and policy areas he is most passionate about – improving sustainable development and tackling poverty.

Steve commented:

“Wales is at a crossroads. In one direction is a return to business as usual, and in the other direction is the chance to make Wales a truly sustainable nation. Over the last few years, Sustrans Cymru has been a pioneering organisation that’s successfully led efforts to secure world-leading legislation on active travel. The priority in the coming years is to ensure this legislation is implemented properly. That means better infrastructure and wider promotion of walking and cycling options.

“I’m passionate about sustainability and I’m really excited to be joining the talented team of staff and volunteers at Sustrans Cymru. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in, building on the work of Jane Lorimer, and helping create a Wales where more people are able to make smarter travel choices.”

Steve succeeds Jane Lorimer who leaves Sustrans after 8 years service. Key achievements during Jane’s tenure as National Director include Sustrans’ important contribution to shaping the seminal Active Travel (Wales) Act, and delivery of the UK’s largest travel behaviour change delivery project which achieved an 8% reduction in single car occupancy journeys in the Cardiff region.
