Sharron Davies launches the Big Pedal

Sharon Davies and school children at Queen's Crescent Primary school
4 March 2015

Olympian and TV presenter Sharron Davies joined children at Queen’s Crescent Primary School in Chippenham, Wiltshire to launch The Big Pedal.

The Big Pedal is an inter-school competition that encourages pupils to lead healthier lives and reduce traffic around the school gates, by challenging them cycle or scoot their journey to school for 10 days.

Sharron Davies, whose son scoots to school every day, was interviewed at the launch by ITV and BBC Radio Wiltshire and talked about how children could “get some exercise before the school bell rings by cycling and scooting to school with The Big Pedal".

Some passing rain in the morning didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm with the scooter and bike racks bursting full.

As a reward the children and teachers were treated to a BMX stunt display by Guinness World record holder Matti Hemming and a cycle training session from Wiltshire County Council.

Run by Sustrans and funded by the Bicycle Association on behalf of the cycle industry through its Bike Hub scheme, The Big Pedal has become the UK’s largest cycling and scooting competition.
