13 January 2015

2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the National Cycle Network.  We spent the year celebrating and saying thank you to all the people who helped us to develop it, the thousands of volunteers who work to maintain it, and the millions of people who enjoy it every day.

The year was a great success and showed just how many people use and love the National Cycle Network everyday.

The history

In September 1995 the Millennium Commission placed their faith in what was, at the time, a small charity, awarding us £42.5 million to create our vision of a UK-wide network of high-quality, convenient walking and cycling routes. The Network has demonstrated that providing safe, attractive walking and cycling networks is a crucial way to give people the confidence they need to leave their car at home and walk and cycle more.

The future

We’re proud of what the Network has achieved. It’s a great step in the right direction, but we know there is still so much to do.  We need to see more investment in developing and maintaining walking and cycling networks to ensure that the walking and cycling revolution continues to grow.
