Autumn is a lovely time to be outdoors

mother and toddler

Despite the nip in the air and the nights drawing in, autumn is a lovely time to be outdoors.

Whether you want to entertain the kids or are looking for a great day out with the whole family, we've got a whole host of rides and walks on the National Cycle Network that are perfect for this time of year.

Get outdoors and be active

Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail

The Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail in Leicestershire takes you past Conkers, a fantastic forest-themed attraction with a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities. It's a great place to keep children amused during the autumn school break.

See ghoulish goings on

York to Beningbrough Hall

The York to Beningbrough Hall route starts and finishes very close to the Treasurer’s House in York, where many people have reported seeing the ghost of a Roman soldier in the cellar. A daily tour tells you the story.

Celtic Trail

Or alternatively use the Celtic Trail to head to Llancaiach Fawr Manor near Caerphilly which was named as one of the top 10 most haunted buildings in Britain. The route travels right past the Galligaer Road and the Manor is just down this road.

Visit a castle

National Route 1

Dover castle is one of the most iconic English fortresses and sits alongside another British icon, the White Cliffs of Dover. School holidays are a great opportunity to take learning outside of the classroom and see a piece of history from a close-up perspective. National Route 1 starts at Dover but there are also other regional routes that link with Dover. There are plenty of things to see and do for an action-packed day out.

Play conkers

Garw Valley

Go searching for conkers and hold the ultimate conkers championship! The best place to find horse chestnut trees is in parks. The Garw Valley route in the South Wales valleys travels through Bryngarw Country Park and the largest horse chestnut is found on the boundary of the woodland garden.

Go rockpooling

Cleveland Coast route

Beaches don't just have to be for summer. The Cleveland Coast route takes you to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, which at low tide has accessible rockpools, where you might spot crabs and starfish. Get your wellies on and you can happily explore the rockpools for hours.
