Route 656 of the National Cycle Network takes you on a strenuous journey through the North York Moors. It connects Coxwold to Hawnby, via Sutton Bank National Park Centre.

This is a very challenging route. It is mainly on-road and is an alternative to the lower-level Route 65.

Starting at Coxwold, where the route branches east from Route 65, it heads through the North York Moors via Sutton Bank National Park Centre. From here the route takes Clevedon Road north before turning left onto Snake Yate Bank towards Hawnby village. This is a hilly section with some very steep gradients which reconnects to Route 65 before Osmotherley.
