Principal Urban Designer, Midlands & East

Sustrans, the charity that’s enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day, is looking for a highly motivated person, who is passionate about the promotion of sustainable transport, has a strong technical background and relevant experience to join our Design & Engineering team in the following role:

The role

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead the Urban Design element of Sustrans regional Design and Engineering team and support the planning, development and delivery of high quality “local solutions” that feed into Sustrans Liveable Cities and Towns strategy project

Being responsible for the production of innovative designs for networks, neighbourhoods and streets, including public realm and infrastructure, your work will help to develop a portfolio of ground-breaking, community-led projects contributing to the creation of healthier, happier cities and towns, ensuring that best practice street design is available to local community groups and colleagues, allowing them to re-shape their local environment and create places that encourage active travel and benefit their health and wellbeing.

About you

If you have a relevant qualification and experience of working on design projects with significant levels of community engagement or involvement, and a passion for active travel, this is an excellent opportunity to join a team of like-minded people. 

We are looking for a talented individual with a background in project management, workshop facilitation and experience of working in partnership with local authorities.

You can help us provide strategic direction and professional leadership to all aspects of our design work, leading the urban designers in the preparation of high quality, imaginative and technically-competent design solutions. 

You will also be committed to the promotion of sustainable transport.
