Kennet and Avon Canal

A lovely mix of gorgeous countryside and tranquil canals, the 21-mile Kennet and Avon Canal route is a perfect day out for the whole family. There’s plenty to see and do near the route, including Highclere Castle, Nature Discovery Centre, and the Museum of Reading.

With its gentle gradients and the close-up view of canal-side life, the Kennet and Avon Canal route is a wonderful way to explore this corner of Berkshire. Linking Newbury with the modern centre of Reading, the route follows the canal towpath, with an occasional on-road detour.

Quieter than the western section of the Kennet and Avon Cycle Route (between Bath and Devizes), it's a delightful day out for the whole family.

There are stations every few miles along the route so it’s easy to plan a day trip. With lots of attractions in the area, including Highclere Castle, Nature Discovery Centre, and the Museum of Reading, it’s worth coming off the canal path and doing some further exploring.

With its lovely mix of gorgeous countryside and tranquil canals, the Kennet and Avon Canal route is a wonderfully peaceful trail.
