TravelSmart

Sustrans' TravelSmart holds the key to one of the greatest environmental and social challenges of the 21st Century, reversing the trend towards increased car use and tackling its impacts on climate, public health and quality of life.

TravelSmart achieves this by giving people the tailor-made information and support they need to walk, cycle and use public transport more often. This process is known as Individualised Travel Marketing (ITM). TravelSmart demonstrates that people are very willing to change their travel behaviour when they are given the information and motivation they need so that they can choose to travel differently.

Since its early pilot projects, TravelSmart has succeeded in reducing car use by 10-14% wherever it has operated whilst also increasing levels of walking, cycling and public transport use. It delivers measurable and sustained change by encouraging people to make a few changes to their daily travel choices when and where it suits them best.

TravelSmart is delivered in partnership with Socialdata, an international social and travel research consultancy which has pioneered the ITM approach in Europe, Australia and the US over the past 20 years. To date in the UK, we have completed TravelSmart ITM projects targeting a total of more than 128,000 households, including large-scale programmes in Peterborough, Worcester and Lancashire.
