TravelSmart

Sustrans' personalised travel planning (PTP) projects hold the key to one of the greatest environmental and social challenges of the 21st Century, reversing the trend towards increased car use and tackling its impacts on climate, public health and quality of life. 

TravelSmart Watford familyOur PTP projects - usually known as TravelSmart - achieve this by giving people the tailor-made information and support they need to choose to walk, cycle and use public transport more often.  

Since its early pilots, TravelSmart projects have succeeded in reducing car use by an average of 11%. They have also increased levels of walking, cycling and public transport use. They deliver measurable and sustained change by encouraging people to make a few changes to their daily travel choices when and where it suits them best.

To date in the UK, we have completed projects covering more than 300,000 households. Average results from all of these projects to date are as follows:
