Travelling Green
Travelling Green is a 6 week walking project which aims to encourage as many children as possible to change their method of travel to and from school, by increasing active commuting (walking) to school. Have a look at this flyer (pdf).
Travelling Green is an interdisciplinary project focusing on Health and Wellbeing with links to Science, Social Studies, Expressive Arts, Technologies and Languages.
Children learn about walking time and distance, they chart their progress to a more active journey to school and learn about healthy eating, why walking is good for them and how to stay safe on the walk to school.
Who is it aimed at?
Travelling Green is aimed at P5s (9 year olds) in primary schools in Scotland, but it can also be used in composite classes.
What can it achieve?
Setting realistic, individual, achievable physical activity targets.
Feedback from teachers.jpg)
"Well thought out and children benefitted from it - many changed their route and started walking togther in groups."
"Easy to use with lots of additional resources and support materials."
"A good resource, making cross-curricular links."
What's new with Travelling Green?
In a recently published research study on schoolchildren from five different schools in the Glasgow area those doing Travelling Green have been shown to be generally more physically active than those who did not. In this study physical activity was measured objectively using accelerometers which made the study more accurate than previous ones which had used self-reported physical activity.
The results showed that walking varies with the season but that those who did Travelling Green walked more than those who did not do Travelling Green. It seems that Travelling Green is insufficient to overcome the negative effects of cold, wet weather and dark mornings and afternoons. The paper discusses that at the age the children do Travelling Green (8-9 years) parents are most likely to be the decision-makers about how the child travels to school. The ability of children of this age to influence their parents on mode of travel may be limited.
Interactive Travelling Green
Sustrans has developed new, free, eye-catching interactive whiteboard flipcharts that can be used with any interactive whiteboard. The flipcharts complement the paper resource pack and provide more opportunities for engagement in the classroom. You can download the interactive resources for free from the Promethean Planet partnership.
We have produced a useful guide (pdf) to downloading the interactive resources from Promethean Planet.
