What's Going On?
Events
Despite only recently getting started, the active travel work with the Northern Trust and Social Care Trust schools has already seen almost 90 children receive cycle training, Walk to School Week events, school bike rides and the initiation of school travel plans. Watch this space for updates of our work in schools throughout Northern Ireland.

Rural SRS Project 2007-2008
The schools put in a huge amount of effort and one of the keys to encouraging active school journeys was to run entertaining events to get pupils, teachers and parents excited and raise the profile of their initiatives.

School children at St Marys Derrytrasna, Co Armagh, enjoyed dressing up in ghoulish fancy dress for their Halloween Spooky Stroll event.

Building for walking and cycling – setting the right scene
All schools who took part in this project were eligible for improvement works outside the school to make the area more accessible and safer for walking and cycling – this work ranged from Flashing Lights at key times, to the creation of traffic free cycle lanes.
This work was carried out in consultation with the schools and delivered by our partners, DRD Road Service. All schools got a cycle shed installed to tackle the issue of where children can safely leave their bikes in bad weather, such as at St Marys Derrytrasna, below. The photograph on the right shows the increase in escorted rides on the new cycle path at Hezlett Primary.
