Lochs & Glens South

National Cycle Route 7

Route: Glasgow to Carlisle via Dumfries and Glen Trool

Distance: 193 miles. Map shows 219 miles of route, of which 41 are traffic-free.

The route leaves Glasgow along a designated cycle route, which was one of Sustrans' first projects in Scotland, and heads into the rolling hills and pastures of Ayrshire, with fantastic views towards Arran and the Clyde Coast. A notable feature of this route is the huge Galloway Forest Park. More than a timber producer, it incorporates almost 200,000 acres of forest, moorland and lochs. Leaving the forest means a descent to the Solway Coast, a haven for bird life and a final leg through Dumfries and Galloway. Despite its turbulent history, this "Gateway to Scotland" is now a peaceful area of farms and quiet country towns. Ruined castles are the only reminder of the centuries of cross border raids.

The route is well served by rail connections at Glasgow and Carlisle as well as many smaller stations along the way. Please consider whether you can reach the start of your ride by public transport. Information for cyclists is available on the First ScotRail website.
