Sea to Sea (C2C)

National Route 41 National Route 71 National Route 7

Important update - 23/11/09

Damage caused by heavy rain in the north of England has made parts of the National Cycle network across Cumbria impassable, cyclists and walkers are being warned. Information on affected routes and further contacts for updated details are available online. Please view our press release 'Flooding closes parts of National Cycle Network in Cumbria' in conjunction with the generic information below.

Route: Whitehaven or Workington to Newcastle or Sunderland (Irish Sea off Cumbrian Coast to North Sea off Northumbrian Coast). Map includes Penrith-Carlisle Link to Scottish route.

Distance: 140 miles. Map shows 202 miles of route, of which 79 traffic-free.

The UK's most popular 'challenge' cycle route passes through the northern Lake District before climbing the Pennines, 'the roof of England', and then descending to the railway paths of County Durham. It includes Black Hill, the highest point on the National Cycle Network (609m) and the Consett-Sunderland railway path and sculpture trail.
