Somerset Street key evaluation results
Surveys were undertaken at the outset of the project and again at the end of the project. Below is a synopsis of the results:
Safer:
82% of residents agree that traffic speeds have been reduced
58% of residents agree that traffic volumes have been reduced
This is further backed up by traffic volume and speed counts which were conducted at the outset and again when the project was complete. The traffic volume data shows a 74% drop from 213 vehicles over a 24 period to 158. The speed counts show a drop of 1 mile per hour during rush hour from 19 miles per hour to 18 miles per hour
69% of residents now feel that their street is safe for children to play on, a huge increase from 0% at the outset
Greener:
78% of residents say the street is greener and more attractive than it was
Sense of community:
82% now feel that the street is pedestrian friendly up from only 27% at the outset
34% of residents surveyed say they are socialising with people in their street who they didn't know before
Recommendation:
82% of those surveyed would recommend DIY Streets to their friends, family and neighbouring streets
Additional or ongoing resident involvement:
The residents have set up a gardening group to maintain the planters in the street
