Penn Street key evaluation results
Surveys were undertaken at the outset of the project and again at the end of the project. Below is a synopsis of the results:
Safer:
23% of residents agree that traffic speeds have been reduced.
23% of residents agree that traffic volumes have been reduced.
This is further backed up by traffic volume counts which were conducted at the outset and again when the project was complete showing a drop of 39 vehicles per hour. Before an average of 109 vehicles were passing through per hour in rush hour, whereas afterwards, this dropped to 70 per hour.
15% of residents now feel that their street is safe for children to play on, almost double of those at the outset (8%).
Greener:
54% of residents say the street is greener and more attractive than before.
Sense of community:
54% now feel that the street is pedestrian friendly up from only 8% at the outset
31% of residents surveyed say they are socialising with people in their street who they didn't know before.
Recommendation:
90% of those surveyed would recommend DIY Streets to their friends, family and neighbouring streets.
Additional or ongoing resident involvement:
The residents of Penn Street arranged their own street party and are planning to work with Manchester's horticultural officer in the near future to enter Harpurhey in Bloom.
