Brooke Road and Evering Road junction, Hackney
Introducing the street
The Brooke Road and Evering Road junction is located in Hackney, north-east London. The junction is very busy with traffic avoiding the speed and parking restrictions on the main roads (Upper Clapton Road, Stoke Newington High Street and Northwold Road).
Evering Road is a long straight road which encourages high speeds. There is a primary school and a nursery close to the junction. The junction is wide, with traffic lanes both sides of an island which local residents see as wasted space. In the surrounding streets there are some 20mph zones with speed humps as well as some one way streets without measures allowing contra-flow cycling.
The area does not benefit from a Controlled Parking Zone. Residents perceive that parking therefore dominates the side streets. This can make crossing side streets very difficult for those with mobility issues or parents with push-chairs.

Note: This project has yet to be built as further funding is being sought to include the artwork proposal. It is hoped this will happen in 2010.
Proposed solutions:
- Pinch points in the form of build-outs will be built to narrow all the roads entering the junction meaning vehicles must slow down when approaching and pass through the junction.
- Trees will be planted in the largest build-out making the space more people friendly and pleasant.
- Artwork - circular rings of cobbles and text engraved in metal will be set into the street surface to give the notion of a pebble being dropped into a brook as a stream runs under Brooke Road.
Next steps for Brooke/Evering Roads Junction:
The residents are working with Sustrans to try to secure the additional funding needed to see the art proposal installed along with the street redesign.
