Beech Croft Road, Oxford
Introducing the street
Beech Croft Road's residents have been working to bring about positive changes to their street for a number of years. Although they were ineligible for Sustrans' main DIY Streets pilot project, a separate funding grant from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation has enabled them to become the eleventh DIY Street.
Beech Croft Road suffers from a high volume of speeding traffic, made worse by the street being straight and narrow. Car drivers also occasionally park their vehicles 'out of the way' of speeding traffic on the pavements, therefore blocking the safe route for pedestrians.
There are over 60 children presently living on Beech Croft Road and a nursing home situated at the far end where only one elderly lady dares venture out into the street for fear of passing traffic.
The residents hope to reduce traffic speeds and volume, minimise nuisance parking and establish the street as a space for the pedestrian instead of solely for the driver.
