Walking and cycling in Southern Europe

Segregated cycle pathSouthern European countries are now demonstrating good practice in promotion of walking and cycling, sometimes operating in areas where previously the car had been dominant.

Vías Verdes run through stunning countrysideFor over 15 years Sustrans has worked closely with cycling organisations in France, particularly the Club des Villes Cyclables, Association des Départements Cyclables, national and regional NGOs, and the national transport and planning study centre CERTU, which publishes excellent technical documents.

In Italy we strongly support the Federazione Italiana Amici della Bicicleta in their proposals to develop a national routes network, Bicitalia.

Streets busy with cyclistsFIAB is comprised of local groups in most Italian regions and cities, which also do great work on the local level, and among the links of which we are most proud is the use by Lombardia region of the UK National Cycle Network guidelines as the basis for their own excellent technical manual.

Our collaboration with the Spanish Fundación de los Ferrocarriles dates back to 1993 and the launch of their Programa Vías Verdes - the national greenway programme. The Fundación works with local authorities in all of the autonomous regions of Spain, and has created hundreds of kilometres of superb greenway running through stunning landscapes.

Sustrans has offered technical and other support to the Bizkaia provincial government and expert consultants Iniciativas Ambientales on walking and cycling measures in and around Bilbao, to Gipuzkoa province and the city of San Sebastian - which is now recognised as a leader in walking policy and practice, and to the region of Navarra in developing its bicycle master plan.
