GOAL - Greenways for the Olympics and London
Upates on latest route developments are included on the London news page.
Greenways for the Olympics and London (GOAL) is Sustrans' vision for a coordinated city-wide network of good quality walking and cycling routes. GOAL seeks to provide Londoners with easy access to safe and appealing environments for walking or cycling for leisure, commuting or play.
We originally put forward the GOAL proposal in 2005, shortly following the announcement that London had been selected to host the 2012 Olympic Games with the intention of tapping into the opportunities and energy that the Olympics would bring.
We still use GOAL as an umbrella term and guiding principles for all of our route development work in London, which is delivered through a range of programmes and in partnership with many stakeholders, partners and funders.
GOAL comprises the following main programmes and initiatives.
- the National Cycle Network in London, which is currently made up of 8 numbered routes linking to the London boundary and beyond
- the London Greenways, an extensive network of routes that we are delivering in partnership with Transport for London
- the London Connect2 schemes, which are part of Sustrans nationwide big Lottery supported programme
- the Olympic Routes, walking and cycling paths in the vicinity of Olympic Park. Sustrans identified and proposed the routes in 2006 and 2007 and they are now being progressed by the Olympic Delivery Authority
- a proposed walking and cycling bridge across the Thames, connecting Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf
In addition, our other infrastructure programmes in London, such as DIY Streets, contribute to GOAL by improving road conditions on parts of the greenways network.
The Central Greenways Feasibility Report is now available to download.
