Harrogate, Ripley and the Dales
This scheme will open up many wonderful cycling routes from Harrogate, the largest urban centre in North Yorkshire, into Nidderdale and the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey, and will play an important part in the development of sustainable tourism in the area. The scenic walking and cycling route will be almost entirely traffic-free, and will pass over the iconic Grade 2 listed Viaduct over the Nidd Gorge, continuing on further through peaceful woodland close to the River Nidd, using a newly provided crossing at the A61 main road into Ripley.
The new route will connect Bilton on the northern edge of Harrogate to Ripley, a historic village 4km north of the town, proving a fantastic new route for local residents and tourists to access the major tourist attraction of Ripley Castle, which is currently isolated by main roads and hills.
Links will be made with the existing cycle network to Knaresborough, Starbeck and Harrogate, and the existing National Cycle Network Route 67 will be extended northwards. Further extensions are planned west to Pateley Bridge and beyond, and north to Ripon, largely along the line of the former railway.
